YOGA CLASS DESCRIPTIONS


   

All of Anchorage Yoga's classes are intelligently infused by the movement and styles studied and practiced by our amazing teachers. Classes are ongoing, offered on a "drop-in" basis unless otherwise noted. If you are not sure which classes match your needs, please contact us -- we're available and happy to answer any questions and make suggestions on what class level and style might work best for you. We encourage you to explore all the different class styles. We are confident that you will find classes that inspire, challenge and feel good to you!


Hot 26


This challenging series of 26 poses and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a heated room. The heat allows your body to stretch more deeply and safely, increase circulation to facilitate the body’s natural ability to heal, and helps detoxify the body. This series is designed so that each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments and joints needed for the next posture. It systematically stimulates the organs, glands and nervous system and moves freshly oxygenated blood to 100% of the body.

Hot Yoga


This sequence of yoga postures and breathing exercises is selected and developed from Hatha (physical) yoga. The technique, based on the Ghosh lineage and sequenced by our own Rick Resnick, incorporates Vinyasa and knowledge of the original teachings of Krishnamacharya (who revived Hatha Yoga). A Hot Yoga practice brings better health, mental clarity, builds strength, flexibility, and endurance to anyone willing to work hard in our supportive environment.

Hot Flow


Our Signature Class! Hot Flow is a dynamic vinyasa style practice that combines elements of Bikram, Anusara, Kundalini and Ashtanga Yoga. This "perfect" combination of balancing, strengthening, energizing and deep stretching poses are set to music and practiced in a room heated to 95°. This class is appropriate for newcomers as well as the more experienced yogi. From head to toe your body will feel invigorated and detoxified while you sharpen your mental focus and renew your spirit. Be prepared to SWEAT!

Bliss Flow


Breathe.... Move.... and Sweat your way through this soulful vinyasa class! With sweet tunes and less verbal ques you can dance your way from one pose to the next and top it off with 30 minutes of deep stretch. Be prepared for some mind-massagin’, body-stretchin’ peace-providin’ BLISS.

AY Flow 1


This vinyasa (or flow) style class has an emphasis on alignment and creative in nature. Our flow classes are inventive and thoughtfully sequenced. Rooted in the foundation of Ashtanga you will experience sun salutations, standing & seated postures, back bending and inversions – guided by a slow and steady breath. *Newer students receive extra support and attention in our level 1/2 classes.

AY Flow 2


Our flow (or vinyasa) style class has an emphasis on alignment and creative in nature. All of our flow classes are inventive and thoughtfully sequenced. Rooted in the foundation of Ashtanga you will experience sun salutations, standing & seated postures, back bending, inversions, and arm balances. We guarantee you will leave this class feeling strong in both body and mind. Enliven your mind, lift your spirit, and be ready to explore your edge!

Yoga Sculpt


Yoga Sculpt is a total body workout designed to tone and sculpt every major muscle group. Free weights serve as your own personal adjuster as you move through sun salutations and other yoga postures, enabling extra length and depth in each pose. This intense, but easy to follow class complements your regular yoga practice while pushing your strength and flexibility to new heights. A fun way to mix up your Yoga practice!

Deep Stretch


Deep Stretch is different from most traditional classes in that we don't explore as many standing postures. Remaining close to the floor allows you to penetrate deep beneath the surface of your body. Through slow deep stretching you can unlock and release enormous amounts of tension in the body. This class focus on relaxing into the realm of your hips and shoulders and is often supported by the use of blocks and straps.

YogaLAB


Part guided study, part open forum, the YogaLAB is for inquiry and experimentation. This Hatha based practice is for those with a solid foundation in asana looking to explore inversions, longer holds, backbends, pranayama, and more. Designed like a mini-workshop you are sure to receive hands-on assists and teacher support. Suitable for teachers and established yoga practitioners.

Relax & Restore


On the yoga-class spectrum, restorative yoga is at the opposite end from hot or flow classes. The concept behind restorative yoga is muscular release, as opposed to muscular stretch. The class is designed to allow the body to relax and nourish itself by holding a series of gentle poses for extended periods of time. Props are utilized so that the practitioner can fully surrender. These soothing postures offer an opportunity to linger quietly and savor the simple sweetness of life while inducing stress-reduction, increased circulation and calmness of mind.

Yoga Mama


Designed to nourish the body and soul during pregnancy, expectant mothers will use the principles of mind/body awareness to gain physical and mental strength to help you on your journey. Prenatal yoga can help relieve stress and physical discomfort, improve circulation, aid in digestion and create an overall feeling of well being. You will also find a warm supportive space to connect with other expectant moms. Yoga Mama is based on a Vinyasa template whereas Yoga Mama Gentle is based on a Gentle yoga class.

Kids Yoga


Kids Yoga is a fun-filled yoga experience specifically designed for kids. In our fun environment children play in yoga by imitating animals and nature, using creative expression, games, music, and storytelling. Classes will help develop physical strength and flexibility, concentration, focus and attention, inner strength and body awareness, confidence and self-esteem, relaxation and self-control, and a feeling of well-being and respect for others.
